The property in Rutherford was purchased in 1964 by Louis Honig. The estate was planted with Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon that was sold off to other wineries but shared with family and friends. The ranch served as a gathering place, and Louis had hope that one day he could retire from his conventional job to make wine full-time. Unfortunately, Louis passed away before seeing his ranch become an enterprise. The ranch started making its own wine in 1980 and the Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc won a gold medal at the Orange County fair. In 1984, Michael Honig took over production at 22 years old and still runs the winery today.
