2024 Bonny Doon Picpoul $21.94
Bonny Doon was founded by Randall Grahm in the 1980s. He initially set out to work with Burgundian varieties but quickly found greater success with Rhône grapes in the warm, Mediterranean-influenced climate of California’s Central Coast. As a result, Bonny Doon became one of the early leaders of the Rhône movement in California, as well as a pioneer of the screwcap initiative and an early advocate for ingredient transparency on wine labels.
This wine is made from 100 percent Picpoul Blanc, sourced from the Sweetwater Vineyard, a cool-climate site partially planted to Picpoul Blanc in 2020. The grapes are fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve freshness and acidity.
2023 Kapcsandy Furmint State Lane Vineyard $49.94
Kapcsandy Family Winery is located in Yountville in Napa Valley. Lou Kapcsandy emigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1956. After visiting Bordeaux’s famed Château Léoville-Las Cases in the 1990s, he set his sights on producing world-class wines in Napa Valley.
The family acquired a 20-acre parcel in Yountville that had previously contributed fruit to Beringer’s Private Reserve Cabernet program. Kapcsandy’s philosophy centers on producing “first-growth” quality wines capable of standing alongside the world’s great estates.
This is the winery’s sole dry white wine, made from 100 percent Furmint, an indigenous Hungarian variety. The vines were planted in 2006 adjacent to the winery, using cuttings imported from Tokaj, Hungary. The wine is fermented in stainless steel to highlight purity and minerality.
2024 Outward Shell Creek Valdiguié $28.94
Outward is run by a sixth-generation farming family based in the Paso Robles Highlands District of Central California. Valdiguié is known for ripening at low alcohol levels, producing vibrant, easy-drinking red wines.
The fruit for this bottling comes from Shell Creek Vineyard, one of the first vineyards planted in San Luis Obispo County in the 1970s. As the name suggests, the soils are rich in marine fossils. This wine is made from 100 percent Valdiguié, fermented with whole clusters using carbonic maceration. It is aged for six months in neutral oak and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfur. Best served with a slight chill.
2023 Birichino Lime Kiln Cabernet Pfeffer $34.94
Birichino is a winery based in Santa Cruz, founded by Alex Krause and John Locke, both former members of the Bonny Doon team. They focus on low-intervention winemaking and source fruit from family-owned, own-rooted vineyards planted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
This Cabernet Pfeffer comes from the Lime Kiln Vineyard in San Benito County, planted in 1908 on limestone, fossilized seabed, and granite soils. Cabernet Pfeffer is a rare grape genetically identical to Mourtaou, an extinct variety from southwest France. It found a lasting home in California’s Central Coast, where it was popularized in the late nineteenth century by William Pfeffer. Production is extremely limited, with just five barrels made.
2022 Kid Sister Mokelumne Glen Zweigelt $29.94
Kid Sister is the playful second label of Trail Marker Wine Co., run by husband-and-wife team Drew Huffine and Emily Virgil. Their focus is on cooler vineyard sites across California planted to lesser-known varieties, producing wines with higher acidity and lower alcohol.
This bottling is made from 100 percent Zweigelt sourced from the Mokelumne Glen Vineyard in Lodi. Production is limited to just 187 cases.
2022 Unti Vineyards Sangiovese $43.94
Unti Vineyards was founded in 1997 by Mick Unti and his father, George. Mick has worked across nearly every facet of the wine industry since the 1980s and now oversees all winemaking, sales, and marketing. The family’s love of wines from France, Italy, Spain, and Germany strongly influenced Unti’s focus on Mediterranean-style wines in California.
The estate has been farmed organically since 2003, using organic compost, and all estate vineyards are located within a quarter mile of one another in Dry Creek Valley.
This wine is made from 100 percent Sangiovese Grosso, the same clone used in Brunello di Montalcino. The grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in small open-top tanks, then aged in French oak barrels, 43 percent new. Only 350 cases were produced.
