Shank City and Hang 10 are hosting grass pick-up volleyball on Friday, September 27th at Henry Anderson III Community Park.Note this will take place on softball/baseball field #1, which is right next to the bathrooms on the left side of the park as you enter (it is the first softball/baseball field on the left). There is another event taking place on the multipurpose field that we typically use.
Because we are extending the usual time frame, including more time with the lights on, we are requiring anyone who participates to pay $5 to help cover the cost of renting the field. Exact cash upon arrival or Venmo (@shankcityvb, @Matt-Lenora or @dbaker28).
We will do the RevCo 4s "challenge court" again since that seemed to be by far the most popular last time. To help with some confusion, please read through the below rules for the "challenge court" system:
1. To encourage more mixing of teams and players, we are going to institute that teams will split after each game, win or lose. However, each player is encouraged to bring or find a partner to stick with all night so there is some familiarity, but bringing someone is NOT required. You can absolutely come solo or find someone to pair with at the event, but we do understand that sometimes you want to bring a friend and then stick together, so that's encouraged/allowed.
2. The "challenge court" system will work as it did last time: if your team wins, you move up to the next net and if your team loses, then you move down to the next net. However, this time around, whether you move up or down, you will play with at least two new players. In other words, the team that you just won or lost with will be no more and your new team will be composed of at least 2 members from the team you would have been "challenging".
As an example, let's assume Players 1, 2, 3 and 4 make up Team 1 and they win and move up and Players A, B, C and D make up Team 2 and they lose and move down such that Team 1 and Team 2 will play each other. Now, with the splitting, Team 1 and Team 2 will be mixed together such that, as an example, Players 1, 2, A and B are now Team 1 and Players 3, 4, C and D are now Team 2.
3. This splitting would even occur on the champions court. If you are good enough to stay on the champions court all night with this mixing, then more power to you!
4. If your team loses on the first net of the work up system (the initiation net) and there is a team waiting, then your team must sit out the next round of games before jumping back into the workup system via the initiation net. The same mixing principles will apply such that the team you just lost with will be mixed in with the team that loses and comes "down" to the initiation court.
We will plan to put up 5 nets for the challenge court system. If the RSVPs look like we have enough interest for another net, we will throw that up too. We are probably capped out at 6-7 nets on the softball/baseball field, however.
If you want to bring your own net and crew and do your own thing, opportunistic freeloaders are also welcome.
This is probably not the best for those new to volleyball or like to open hand receive a serve. Level of play will vary from A and AA with some Open players mixed in if the last time we did this is any indication.
If you are coming, please mark yourself as attending to let us know approximately how many to expect. Feel free to arrive later and/or leave earlier than the listed times. We will be there either way!
Please bring your own volleyball(s).
Tell a friend, bring a friend, make a friend, be a friend.
