This Friday Jude will lead and I will assist on the McNeil Point hike.
This is a fairly difficult 9.6 mile hike with 2,200 feet gain that will me at a very moderate pace. We start off on an easy loop around Bald Mountain through a wildflower meadow, then hike to the reflecting ponds and more wildflowers on our way up the challenging trail to the McNeil Point shelter. We will probably have to navigate some blow-downs and part of the trail might involve a small detour. If there are any hikers interested in doing the scramble going up, that will be an available option.
We'll meet and leave at 8:00 am at the Safeway on highway 26 just west of Sandy. Park near the highway by the Safeway sign. We will take Hwy 26 to Lolo Pass Rd where we will head north for 4.2 miles then take the fork to the right on 1825. After .7 miles and, just before you get to the bridge, you go straight for 5.6 milers until you come to gravel road 118 where you go right for 1.5 miles to the Top Spur Trailhead.
Bring lunch, water and electrolytes, boots with good tread. It will be warm so bring extra water and possibly electrolytes. At times in the past, this trail has had biting flies and mosquitos, so I would strongly suggest bring some repellent. Picaridin and Lemon Eucalyptus are two repellents that are non-DEET products that many use.
The carpool fee will be $6.00 and drivers will need a NW Forest Pass or Golden Age Pass.
