Jonnie Goes To Church is the product of Celia Church and Jon von Goes. Celia’s a singer from New Zealand, Jon’s a broadcaster from Melbourne. Celia writes the melodies and sings like an AM radio angel. Jon writes the words and sings like an FM radio broadcaster.
They have a brand new self-titled record that’s turning heads. Recorded and produced by Craig Pilkington at Audrey studios, it’s a collection of 10 near to true life vignettes.
“These songs and sounds are magnificent and this old duck will only be satisfied with the recordings in his webbed hands” – Tim Rogers
“It’s a beautiful offering of songs. You work so well together” – Angie Hart
“Heard your track on Brian and Jacinta last Friday …. absolutely beautiful, world class, achingly sad and all the feelings!” – Rebecca Barnard
Celia has spent half her life in Australia. She was born in Auckland NZ, her talent was noticed early when she was cast as Mary Magdalen in the school play version of Jesus Christ Superstar. She left school rebelliously early to pursue a musical career. She was still a teenager when she was invited to sing with the Headless Chickens who were huge at the time. And she accepted. Then she came to Melbourne.
Take a listen to some of Jonnie Goes To Church below:

She toured extensively with a couple of bands; Probe and The Red Eyes. She’s done her own solo pre-menopausal folk recordings and gigs. She has a massive connection with her soul music sister Julia Deans, another NZ expat who she met in Melbourne. Julia’s band Fur Patrol were no. 1 hit material in NZ. Celia gigged regularly and effortlessly with Julia in Melbourne, then Julia went back to NZ and Celia is still spewin’. Julia sings on the new Jonnie Goes To Church record.
Then Celia met Jon and her life took a turn. Jon is a guitar playing broadcaster. His radio show, the JVG Radio Method on RRR is an institution. Jon has played in many bands. Many of his past band mates belong in institutions – The Scallywags, Mal Function and the Breakfast Dispensers, The Hollowmen, Aloi Head and the Victor Motors, Bulltwang, The Dave Last Orchestra, Big Square, Peter Lillie and The Leisuremasters, The Large Number 12s and The JVG Guitar Method to name some.
It's taken a while to get around to recording and releasing their first album as the whole thing has been a very organic process. Organic is often a euphemism for slow. Not unlike the cucumbers Celia and Jon have grown in their vegie garden, the music has grown into something bigger than they ever expected.
On the night they’ll be playing with their full band, Nathan Farrelly on bass and vocals and Emmy Ray Shaw on drums.
Special guest support on the night is You Am I lead guitarist Davey Lane. Check out some of Davey below:
