About this Event
Southern Documentary Fund is pleased to present a free work-in-progress screening at this year’s Biscuits & Banjos Festival of the upcoming documentary project GERMAN SOUL (working title), as part of our Fresh Docs program.
Potato salad, mac and cheese, crunchy coleslaw paired with pork barbecue—is Southern food mostly German food? This unique documentary experience immerses us in the perspective of Justin Robinson, an intensely curious Black ethnobotanist, as his obsession with researching and embodying the culinary history of his ancestors collides with complex issues of race, genealogy, and identity. Through Robinson's personal journey and conversations with family, food enthusiasts, and scholars, the film uncovers a hidden history and grapples with fundamental questions about cultural myths that continue to shape the American experience.
Doors open at 5:30pm and the presentation will start at 6pm. There will also be a discussion with filmmakers Justin Robinson (@countrygentlemancooks) and D.L. Anderson (@vittlesfilms) immediately following the presentation.
This project is also fiscally sponsored by SDF and more information on supporting it can be found here: https://southerndocumentaryfund.networkforgood.com/projects/241662-german-soul
