The landlocked Southeastern and Central European country of Serbia is an intriguing place, as it’s one of the few continuously inhabited since the Palaeolithic age, aka the old stone age, dating back around 3.3 million years! On this Trekkup you will uncover some of Serbia’s best kept secrets by exploring its landscape, culture, cuisine, and heritage sites. Surrounded by stunning canyons, valleys, and mountains you’ll be treated to a hearty helping of nature’s artwork, climbing the walls of the 14th century Maglic Fortress to feast your eyes on the Valley of the Serbian Kings.
You’ll also explore your inner world at the Studenica Monastery UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the oldest and most significant in all of Serbia, and a mausoleum for the Nemanjic dynasty, the most prominent of Serbia’s Middle Ages. Immersing yourself in local customs in quaint villages, the delicious goodness of some of Serbia’s national treats await, including sarma (cabbage stuffed with meat and rice), gibanica (egg and cheese pie), plijeskavica (meat patty), cevapi (grilled meats), paprikas (paprika soup) and so much more. Well-deserved treats after days spent hiking the fairy tale terrain of Serbia’s raw nature.
Let's go!
DAY 1 // ARRIVAL IN BELGRADE
Welcome to Belgrade! Post immigration clearance we will be transferred to our hotel in Serbia’s capital, welcomed with dinner and local beverage tasting. Overnight in the hotel.
DAY 2// BELGRADE – CABLAR - BOGUTOVAC
Today we leave Belgrade and head towards Cablar mountain. It is often said the best way to explore Serbia is on foot, and Cablar is considered one of its gems! So, it’s no surprise then that today we lace up our boots and get to hiking the Cablar gorge along the Morava River; passing through an area home to 15th and 16th century Serbian monasteries nestled between two mighty mountains. Considered a medium-hard hike, Cablar’s peak stands at 889 masl, and on our journey we will immerse ourselves in beautiful nature played to the soundtrack of bird song. Atop of Cablar we will stop for a picnic lunch, and then head to the nearby Ovcar Spa to unwind in a hot springs indoor pool, before heading to our guest house in the village of Bogutovac for the night.
DAY 3// BOGUTOVAC – STOLOVI – BOGUTOVAC
Rising to a traditional Serbian breakfast this morning we head out for another hike across Serbia’s gorgeous rural landscape, stopping first at the Zica monastery – where Sebia’s kings were crowned. Today’s hike of up to seven hours takes us to Stolovi mountain – home to wild daffodils and wild horses. Stopping for yet another beautiful scenic picnic lunch at the peak, we will visit the 13th century Maglic fortress on our way back to our guesthouse for the evening.
DAY 4// BOGUTOVAC – CEMERNO – ZLATAR
After breakfast we bid farewell to our gracious hosts and head to the Studenica monastery to visit the King’s church and treasury, before hitting the Cemerno mountain trail. Today our hike takes us through oak and beech forests as we head to the Hermitage of Saint Sava – which is open and actively tended to by monks from the Studenica. After today’s incredible experience – or pilgrimage depending on how you look at it – we’ll move to the Zlatar mountain area to spend the night in another rural guest house.
DAY 5// ZLATAR – SJENICA – ZLATAR
After another delicious Serbian breakfast, we head out to Sjenica to start today’s trek along the cliffs of the Uvac Canyon – a 75 sq km nature reserve, one of Serbia’s most treasured, and home to the griffon vulture. Stopping at key viewpoints to soak in the famous curving meanders, we will lunch in nature before heading back to our guest house for the last time.
DAY 6// ZLATAR – DRINA – DEPARTURE
After a hearty breakfast we leave our guesthouse to make our way to Drina River – a 346km river that forms a large portion of the border between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Here we will stop for a spot of Kayaking before heading to the airport to catch our flight home with a life time of memories.
