An evening in the funkiest of Freo warehouses, featuring three complementary local bands. Nominally, they might fall in the folk genre, with plenty of acoustic instruments, a shed-load of harmonies and down-to-earth storytelling. However, there’s a diversity and energy in their music that is very cross-genre.6pm: Doors and Bar open
6:45pm: Last House Band
7:45pm: Folk Like Us
8:45pm: Dave Robertson & The Kiss List
Dave Robertson & The Kiss List are back from hiatus. Dave sings about kissing, climate change, cult 70s novels and more kissing. His thoughtful, sometimes cheeky, lyrics are personal, political, playful and powerful. Influences range from story-teller singer/songwriters like Ani Difranco, Paul Kelly, Jason Isbell and Billy Bragg, to the atmospherics of bands such as The National and The Cure. The Kiss List stars Rachel Armstrong on violin/mandolin, Rob Findlay on electric guitar, and Tore Pedersen on bass. They all sing harmonies. Their latest single The Green Light tells the tale of an entanglement between two very different people. Previous popular songs include Montreal from the Oil, Love & Oxygen album, and Canary in the Coal Mine, which was played nationally on Double J and glowingly reviewed.
Folk Like Us hail from Hammy Hill and were united by a love of the St Pat’s Starlight Hotel Choir. They are often found on the street corner in Freo, playing tunes by and for ordinary folk. Folk Like Us play an eclectic mix of music including edgy country tunes, folk, indie rock, pop, a hint of bluegrass and a touch of psychedelia. The lineup is Peter Anthony on guitar and vocals, Dave Johnson on mandolin, guitar and vocals, Maggie Hale on bass and vocals and Helen Lorenz on keyboard and vocals. Their repertoire of covers and originals brings spine tingling harmonies and toe tapping rhythms, sure to have you up on the dance floor. Inspired by the likes of Gillian Welsh, Lucinda Williams, the Triffids, the Byrds, Kasey Chambers, Gram Parsons and Joy Division to name but a few, Folk Like Us appeal to diverse musical tastes.
Last House Band is a contemporary acoustic band featuring guitar, violin, mandolin, ukulele, double-bass and three-part harmonies. They have a large, well-honed repertoire of original songs, plus a small eclectic selection of covers by Fairport Convention, Blitzen Trapper, Lemonheads, and The Magnetic Fields. Their original songs span a range of styles, from confronting folk-ballads, catchy country & pop, to Celtic foot stompers, with detours towards ragtime, rockabilly and bluegrass territory. Last House Band features Rob Findlay, Rachel Armstrong and Anna Chandler, plus occasional guests such as Tore Pedersen/Aidan Kelly and Reuben Kooperman. Between them, they have a mass of band credits, but together they combine to produce something where the whole is undeniably greater than the sum of its parts.
The Japanese restaurant in the front part of the building, Hinata Cafe, will be open from 5:30pm (bookings only) if you wish to grab a pre-show feed. You may also BYO food into the Fibonacci Centre, though there may be limited table space. No BYO alcoholic beverages, because there’s a bar!
