Freight returns to Bloomington with their distinctive brand of alt. country and roots rock. Founded by JP Payton in early 2020, Freight has risen to the fore of the wider Americana landscape. With a unique familiarity that has drawn comparisons to Wilco, The Grateful Dead, Dave Alvin, and other roots music heavyweights, the songs of Freight are sure to make a home deep in the hearts of their listeners.Lead by seasoned songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, JP Payton and supported by singer-songwriter, Loveday Greene, Freight paints a moving harmonic portrait. Backed by drummer and Knoxville native Bowman Townsend (Black Lillies), veteran bassist Mike Brando (Janet Batch). Freight's groove is road-tested, danceable fun.
While cutting his teeth in the happening Athens, GA scene of the late 80’s and 90s, Michael Callahan became steeped in a significant musical moment. Regaling stories of high profile national tours, MTV video placements, and historic nights at the 40 Watt, Callahan’s life experiences are vast and songwriting pedigree honest. With many dues long ago paid, what persists is a dyed in the wool songwriter working at the height of his craft.
Its only natural Callahan is still putting out great albums decades into an active musical career. And it seems natural for Callahan to have played this long game so gracefully. “There was a time, I thought music was a young man’s business, but as I got older, I realized I needed music now more than ever. And I think I write better now than I ever did. You accumulate experiences that are really intense, breakups, health issues, loss. As you get older there’s a lot more to write about. To me that's powerful. I’m all about the goosebump factor.”
Janet Batch is country music with an art degree. Here's what others are saying about the Batch;
“Her style feels akin to the early work of Rosanne Cash, with her devil-may-care attitude and country twang, but Batch’s colorful stories often conjure up the wily work of Jim Croce by way of Emmylou Harris’ heavenly croon” - The Big Takeover
“Batch exudes a forlorn vibe on "Radio" thanks to potent, economical storytelling that illustrates the struggles of loving an artist. She wrings every last syllable from her lyrics to haunting effect—it's hard not to feel the despair when she laments, "You wanted empty and I / Gave you more empty than you could stand."" - Earmilk
“As infectious as the music is, the prize of the song is Janet’s nasal lilt, simultaneously resonant and radiating alluring twing-twang nuances. It’s one of those potent, tantalizing country voices appearing on the music scene once in a great while – easy to listen to, vibrant, and graceful, what some might call ‘posh provincial.’” - Guitar Girl
“With her twangy voice and songs of working-class life, you might think that Janet Batch hails from the Blue Ridge Mountains or the hollers of Kentucky. But the Ithaca-based singer-songwriter actually grew up on a dairy farm in the small town of Litchfield, just southeast of Utica.” - Jim Catalano City Magazine
