Join local Walyalup (Fremantle) ceramicist Sally Smith from Deep Earth Ceramics and learn about the fun and meditative craft of slab building to create your own unique works. This class is a flexible and all encompassing for those who may have big ideas, or would like to continue learning about ceramics but don't want to be held to making a particular object.
You may choose to make whatever you like in this class, including but not limited to mugs, cups, vases, bowls, functional ware or even your own sculpture.
With dark stoneware clay you'll learn to assemble from a starting slab. Sally will guide you through any tweaks so you can customise the design. You'll have the chance to play with techniques like slab, coil and pinch.
Please note: you will be given 800 grams of clay to play with, the only off limits are wide platters that will not fit into our kiln. Our instructor will also work with you to ensure your pieces have the integrity to hold up in the kiln ie. not too thin and that you'll be able to finish the works on time.
There will also be ideas and templates for those who may be undecided on what to make on the day.
All tools, materials and light morning tea will be provided. There are no previous skills required, simply bring your authentic self. Participants are welcome to bring along their own aprons or borrow one of ours.
Takeaway
-Time in our warehouse with an incredible local artist
-The freedom to create and experiment with clay
-Tea and cake from our cafe to enjoy while you are crafting
-The skills to continue at home
Important details
Your piece will be glazed and fired at Sally's studio. Cost included in your ticket. A huge amount of care is exercised when finishing off your precious hand-made items. Please note that clay is unpredictable and on rare occasions, items break in the kiln. This is all a natural part of the fun of perfecting your craft.
Works will be available within ~5-6 weeks of the class date from the Stackwood store. You will be contacted when they are ready to pick up.

About Sally
Sally Smith discovered clay when she was just 5 years old. Since that day she has travelled many creative paths and all have brought her back to her first love; clay as a vehicle for expression. From her Stackwood studio, Sally creates unique pieces with emotional authenticity, preferring essential beauty over conventional perfection. Most importantly her work is made with love and designed for use each and every day.
