Try Freedive & Try Mermaid — Rangatahi DayFree places for rangatahi
What it is
Instructor-led introductions to freediving and mermaid skills for rangatahi (12–24). Safe, hands-on, non-certification experiences designed to get young people active, curious and connected to a new sport. Funded places available through Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa. Led by SSI-qualified instructors from Freedive Aotearoa.
Why we’re running it:
Introduce rangatahi to a new sport. A short session can spark a lifelong interest, boost confidence, and build relationships through movement and shared challenge. This pilot is part of our youth access work and community kaupapa: Recover → Dive → Adventure. Freedive Aotearoa is an SSI-affiliated training centre focused on safety, inclusion and environmental stewardship.
Full details
Who: Rangatahi aged 12–24. Under 16s require parent/guardian consent and a responsible adult to collect.
Time: 9am - 3pm
Group size: Max 8 participants per instructor
Format: 1 Hour safety, skills, Equiptment & breathwork briefing, dryland skills, water skills and guided try-dives/mermaid practice, review/debrief.
Where: Whangarei Aquatic Center
Cost: Funded places are free for rangatahi via Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa.
What to bring: Lunch, Togs, towel, water bottle, a warm change of clothes. We supply masks, snorkels and fins as needed.
Safety: Participants must complete all paper work to join in water activities,

Before entering the water. We cannot accept participants with uncontrolled epilepsy, recent heart issues, or other conditions that make breath-hold or immersion unsafe. All staff comply with Freedive Aotearoa safety procedures.
