This week we have a Jazz Fest special featuring Free Status!
Free Status is a jazz fusion band blending the melodic richness of Herbie Hancock and 70s jazz-funk with an electronic edge inspired by Moby. Their sound is both nostalgic and forward-looking, offering high-energy grooves and inventive compositions.
At the helm is Tommy David (keys), a rising talent whose original works have earned competition recognition and seen him share stages with acts like Dire Straits Legacy Band, Nazareth, and Hello Sailor. Joining him are seasoned rhythm players Behzad Karakia (drums) and Tyler Diprose (bass), both respected for their work alongside Aotearoa’s jazz greats.
The frontline features James Dawes (alto sax), fresh from selection for an international touring ensemble, and Sam Voyle (keys/sax), a longtime collaborator of Tommy’s with standout performances at the America’s Cup and major festivals.
Together, Free Status delivers a vibrant, genre-bending live experience you won’t forget.
