DATE: October 24, 25, 26, 2024Bob Young, a qualified conservator and the administrator of Evergreen Cemetery in Fayetteville AR, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, will provide a 3-day tombstone repair and restoration course, free of charge, at the Chambers Cemetery in Rogers County, beginning Thursday, October 24th at 9am, and ending on Saturday, October 26th at 5pm.
Participants will learn to evaluate and create a rescue plan for each stone, to include identifying different types of stone and how to calculate their weight based on type and measurements, how to build a tripod and to use it, understand leveling techniques, how to reassemble the stone, and what types of bonding agents work best for which types of stones. Mr. Young has stated he can restore the entire cemetery in one week IF he has help.
Because there is a perpetual need for tombstone preservation within Cherokee Nation, Cherokee Cemeteries is requesting assistance with this 3-day endeavor. By offering instruction in this trade, Cherokee citizens can learn a trade at which they can make a successful living, while serving Cherokee people as well.
All tools, materials, bottled water, and a daily lunch will be provided. Please bring a bag chair and wear appropriate clothing. Sturdy shoes and work gloves are suggested. If you plan to attend this event, please send a PM to the facebook page Cherokee Cemeteries Restoration Organization or email [email protected]. Your response allows us to plan on tools, materials, bottled water, and a daily lunch.
