Thousands of aging people are incarcerated in Pennsylvania’s prisons due to some of the harshest sentencing in the world. The geriatric prison population in PA has exploded from 6% in 1996 to 25% in 2020.A new bill has just been introduced that could free our elders, offering geriatric and medical parole for anyone over 55 — SB835 who has already served decades.
Mass incarceration is not a solution for our communities. Everyone deserves a chance at freedom. And the bill would not automatically release anyone, it would only allow a chance to see the parole board. We know that older people have the lowest recidivism rates and cost the most money to incarcerate: it's urgent to fight for our elders, grandparents, and mentors to come home!!
It’s time to turn the pressure up—let's gather together and raise our voices in Philly to pressure Senator Lisa Baker to support SB835!! Speakers will include Senator Sharif Street, Senator Nikil Saval, and Rep Rick Krajewski who are backing the bill. We need your support to send a clear message to all Pennsylvanians that the decarceration wave is rising and they need to get on board!
