Summary
About this Event

The Skills For Change Black Community Access Programs team presents the screening of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a film based on the memoir by William Kamkwamba, a young Malawian innovator who, despite poverty and systemic barriers, builds a wind turbine to save his village during a devastating period of water scarcity, and famine. The film illustrates how climate-driven shocks—including depleted water sources, failed crops, and collapsing infrastructure— push families and entire communities to the brink.

  • Shows how historic underinvestment in Black communities in formerly colonized countries leaves them structurally unequipped to adapt to climate-driven crises such as drought, water shortages, and famine.
  • Reveals how global inequities in wealth, resources, and infrastructure disproportionately expose Black communities to severe and recurrent crises, deepening generational vulnerability.
  • Highlights how these inequities extend into the diaspora, as Black immigrants in Canada often carry the responsibility of financially and emotionally supporting relatives back home who continue to face these systemic hardships.

Pre-Event Panel Discussion: The Realities of Supporting Relatives Abroad Facing Persistent Inequities The event will open with an intergenerational conversation exploring how Black immigrant families navigate the emotional, financial, and cultural responsibilities of supporting loved ones abroad who face persistent inequities—including water scarcity, unstable infrastructure, and limited access to basic services. Panelists will share lived experiences across generations to illustrate how these transnational obligations shape identity, belonging, and the settlement journey in Canada.

Panel Format: Three panelists of different ages (1 black senior, 1 black adult, and 1 black youth). Moderator: Nigel Chikukwa, Manager Black Community Access Programs
