Friends of the Christ Church Organ present the last free lunchtime concert of the year! “Fanfares, Feathers and Fugues” is the title of a wide-ranging programme of organ music to be presented by Roy Tankersley from Palmerston North at Christ Church on Wednesday 6 November at 12.15. Donations invited.
Back in Palmerston North, Roy performs his Organ Power Series bi-monthly at Pathways Presbyterian Church and his Whanganui programme is a selection from some of the best loved pieces performed in recent months.
The programme opens with a Fanfare based on the Sixth double organ concerto by Antonio Soler of Spain. It is arranged by E Power Biggs. Feathers refers to an organ concerto movement by Handel with melodies that imitate a cuckoo and a nightingale. Handel often entertained his audiences during the intervals of his grand oratorios playing an organ concerto.
This year we celebrate 100 years since the death of Gabriel Fauré. Roy will play ‘Aprés un Rêve’, one of his most well-known songs of requited love. Another bird-like piece will be represented by an Andante by Louis Lefébure-Wély. When David Bowie died in 2016, his song ‘Life on Mar’s went viral being played by organists all over the world. This song sounds so majestic and powerful on the organ.
The major work is Bach’s Triple Fugue in E Flat, called the “St Anne’ because the opening is the same melody as the tune usually sung to ‘O God our help in Ages Past’
The programme will close with the hymn tune ‘Deep Harmony’ in memory of Noel Harris of Palmerston North who was at the forefront of organising the National Organ Congress called Extravorganza’ held in Whanganui in 2019.
Roy is a free-lance musician based in Palmerston North and enjoys performing on organ and conducting choirs.
