On October 23, Dr. Kiku Day will present a free & fascinating lecture on the shakuhachi flute and its role in Japanese music! From its traditional role to new modern experimentation, the shakuhachi’s iconic sound is a defining feature of Japanese music. This simple bamboo flute was historically played as a solo instrument by a group of travelling Zen Buddhist monks. Today the shakuhachi has evolved and is used for all types of music: From the traditional sankyoku ensemble with koto, to jazz, to contemporary anime & video-game soundtracks.
Dr. Kiku Day is a professional shakuhachi player who holds a PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of London. Some of her recent publications include:
-Mindful playing: A Practice Research investigation into Shakuhachi playing and Meditation
- The effect of Meiji Government policy on traditional Japanese music: the case of the shakuhachi.
-Aesthetics of Imperfection in Shakuhachi Transmission.
-Zen Buddhism and music: Spiritual shakuhachi tours to Japan
