Experience the history of one of the Caribbean’s most spirited cultural expressions.“J’ouvert,” is a French word (“opening of the day”) it marks the pre-dawn emancipation celebrations of formerly enslaved Africans in Trinidad and Tobago. Originating in the 1800s amidst the struggle against colonial authorities. J’ouvert has evolved into a celebratory ritual within the Caribbean Carnival community.

Join an interactive story time featuring stories from the Caribbean, or try your hand at our cultural discovery table, craft activities, and much more.
About Family Fun Day:
Join us on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to 5pm, with activities from 11am to 4pm, for free things to do, learn, and experience with the whole family! Spend the afternoon exploring the history and culture of our vibrant city.
Family Fun Days are possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners, and the Miami Downtown Development Authority.
