The Sequoia Park Zoo’s 14th annual Conservation Lecture Series continues on Wednesday, January 15 at 7:00 PM PST, hosted by the Sequoia Park Zoo Advisory Group’s Conservation Council. Peter Carlson will discuss the “Status of Spotted Owls in NW California and the Impact of Barred Owls.” Lectures are hosted in-person at the Zoo and online through YouTube.
Barred owl populations have been increasing in the Pacific northwest for several decades and are now impacting northern spotted owls throughout their range. To address this problem, several barred owl removal studies have been done which included areas of local long-term owl demographic studies on Green Diamond property, the Hoopa Reservation, and the Six Rivers and Shasta-Trinity National Forests. Peter Carlson, who worked as a long-time member of the research team for the studies on national forest lands, will discuss recent population trends of the owls, some of the impacts of barred owls, and status of barred owl removal efforts. While the impacts of barred owls are of real concern, that is only one of several ongoing threats to the spotted owl. Peter will also discuss the barred owl issue in the context of multiple stressors.
Peter Carlson is a retired Research Associate with Colorado State University. He began studying spotted owls in the San Bernardino mountains in 1992 and has worked on the NW California demography study since 1994. He has some fond memories of working briefly with barred owls and other raptors, in their native habitat, in Illinois in 1986 prior to beginning his MS work in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Florida. He previously worked for Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) as the field coordinator for the demography study, and from 2005-2023 he worked through Colorado State University.
The 2024-2025 Conservation Lecture Series will be held in-person and remotely through YouTube. The in-person lecture is located at the Sequoia Park Zoo’s Flamingo Room at 3414 W Street in Eureka, CA. In-person attendees can enter the Zoo through Gate C, located to the left of the main gate at the W Street crosswalk. Virtual attendees can watch on YouTube at www.youtube.com/@RedwoodZoo
