This class focuses on practical steps and ongoing strategies that homeowners can use to reduce wildfire risk around their property.
With the increasing risk of wildfires, especially in the wildland-urban interface, proactive landscape management is key to protecting homes and communities.
Fire Facts:
• Texas had the second-largest area burned by wildfires, with around 1.3 million acres impacted in 2024.
• Embers can travel up to 1.5 miles away from a wildfire via the wind.
• 90% of structures consumed by a wildfire are due to embers.
About the speaker:
Jonathan Wright works as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist with AFD's Wildfire Division providing outreach and education to the public. He studied forestry at Cal Poly Humboldt and graduated with a degree in Wildland Fuels Management. He started in Vegetation Management as a Consulting Utility Forester (CUF) for Pacific Gas & Electric and also contracted for AE as a Utility Vegetation Manager (UVM) - Specialist.
