Join the Frederick County Master Gardeners for the Cultivation Lecture Series and learn about The Invasive Box Tree Moth: A New Boxwood Pest.
A new invasive insect that targets boxwood plants may be coming to your area. The invasive box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is native to eastern Asia but has been found in certain areas of North America, including nine U.S. states. In the summer of 2025, the first confirmed report of box tree moth in Maryland was documented in Washington County. It has not yet been confirmed in other Maryland counties. We need your help to watch for this new pest and reduce its impact on boxwood plants. Box tree moth caterpillars damage boxwoods by chewing leaves and bark, which can cause leaf browning, defoliation, and girdling. If you notice chewing damage on boxwood leaves, it may be caused by box tree moth. Join us for this hour-long session to learn more about this insect and what you can do.
