Fred Thomas holds a unique and significant position in the history of R&B. He served as James Brown’s primary bassist from 1971 onwards during the iconic “Make it Funky” era. As a member of Brown’s band the J.B.’s Fred contributed to one of the most prolific periods in the legendary Godfather of Soul’s remarkable career.


Fred’s exceptional bass skills can be heard on numerous hit songs such as “Hot Pants” “Papa Don’t Take No Mess” “Make it Funky” “Get on the Good Foot” “Doing it to Death” “I’m a Greedy Man” “I Got Ants in My Pants” “There it Is” “Stoned to the Bone” as well as instrumental classics like “Pass the Peas” and “Gimme Some More.” In fact his bass lines from songs like Bobby Byrd’s “I Know You Got Soul” and Lyn Collins’ “Think” have been sampled countless times showcasing his enduring influence.


Fred Thomas’s contributions extend beyond the studio. He can be heard on the seminal album “Live at the Apollo Vol. 3 Revolution of the Mind” and can be seen in the documentary “Soul Power” (2008) which captures James Brown’s electrifying 1974 concert in Zaire. Additionally Fred made several appearances alongside James Brown on the popular show “Soul Train.”


In his own band Fred Thomas takes center stage showcasing his talents as a singer bassist and performer. He skillfully blends blues and soul classics with the unforgettable JB hits he recorded on creating an exhilarating musical experience.
