MPF and SERCHIA collaborate to bring you an evening with photographer Francesca Allen, who will be in conversation with writer and curator Charlotte Jansen. Francesca and Charlotte will delve into Francesca’s photographic practice, focusing on her work Konkursas. The talk will be followed by questions from the floor and a book signing. This event has been programmed to coincide with a solo exhibition of Konkursas, on view by appointment at SERCHIA Gallery, BS6 6AJ, from 02 MAY to 04 JUL 2026.
Francesca’s work explores girlhood, youth and identity. For this body of work Francesca photographed Konkursas Pasaulio Ilgaplaukės, Lithuania’s annual competition for the world’s longest hair. Hundreds of girls and women with thousands of feet of hair walk the runway and have their lovingly groomed hair measured by gloved judges, before shaking it in a ceremonial finale. This project sits at the intersection of editorial, portraiture and personal narrative.
Join Francesca, Charlotte and the MPF / SERCHIA team as we explore this work, diving into photography and the dichotomies of modernity and tradition, and obsession and aspiration explored in Konkursas.
Charlotte Jansen is an arts and culture journalist, critic and author of two books on photography, Girl on Girl and Photography Now. She is the photography critic for The Guardian and curator of Discovery at Photo London, the section for emerging galleries and artists.
This event is a collaboration between MPF and SERCHIA. Konkursas is available to view at SERCHIA gallery by appointment until 04 JUL.
