The Friends of the Orphan Schools will hold its annual Fox’s Feast picnic on 23 February 2025 from 11.30 to 2 pm at the Old Sunday School. All are welcome to attend.Fox's Feast was an annual picnic (1863-1879) held at the Queen's Orphan School and paid for from the legacy of John Fox, an ex-convict who had been in an orphanage in England. His legacy also rewarded the best boy and girl each year with 10 pounds and a silver medal, known as the Fox's Medal.
Our guest speaker is Colette McAlpine. Colette is a volunteer with the Female Convicts Research Centre. She works with a team of volunteers based across the globe from southern Tasmania to the highlands of Scotland to research the lives of convict women and their children. Colette has five convict ancestors - 2 women and 3 men. The first of her convicts arrived in NSW on the Neptune with the Second Fleet and came to Port Dalrymple on the Buffalo in 1804. The others came directly to VDL. At Fox’s Feast, Colette will talk about the lives of William James and Ann Charlotte Pretty who came to join their convict father in VDL in Oct 1833 and by May 1835 found themselves in the Orphan School.
Please bring you own picnic lunch – we will provide tea and coffee. If you have rose petals in your garden please bring them to scatter on the burial ground. Our Secretary, Jane Hodgman, will be conducting a tour of the St Johns Park Precinct from 2pm. If you would like to join Jane, please book your place through our website at https://www.orphanschool.org.au/register_tour.php
