About this Event
This talk introduces the institutions, friends and professional networks of Ramsay’s Edinburgh, looking in particular at the development of the domestic art market, the Academy of St Luke, Ramsay Senior’s patronage networks, and Ramsay Junior’s transformation from the portraitist of Charles Edward Stuart to being Principal Painter in Ordinary to George III.
This talk will be led by Murray Pittock MAE FRSE. Murray is Pro Vice-Principal and Bradley Professor at the University of Glasgow, and an NTS Trustee. In 2022 he was Scotland’s Knowledge Exchange Champion. He is General Editor of the Collected Works of Allan Ramsay and was an honorary adviser to the new Scottish Gallery. His recent books include Scotland: The Global History (2022, 2023- Spectator History Book of the Year Choice) and Enlightenment in a Smart City: Edinburgh’s Civic Development 1660-1750 (2019, Association for Scottish Literature book of the year).
