?? Navid Kermani, born in 1967 in South Westphalia from Cologne with Iranian ancestors, has emerged as an Islamic writer and scholar. In his dissertation “God is beautiful” (1999) he brilliantly analyzed the aesthetic dimensions of Islam. In his literary texts such as “The Book of the Listeners Slain by Neil Young” (2002) and “Love Writ Large” (2014), he combines experiences of everyday German life with Islamic traditions in an original way. At the same time, he is perceived as the leading intellectual of post-migrant German society. In numerous speeches, such as in front of the Bundestag on the anniversary of the Basic Law (2014) or in Cologne on the Islamist attack on the Parisian satirical magazine "Charlie Hebdo" (2015), he offered haunting reflections on the demands and reality of German and other European societies and stood up for a cosmopolitan and tolerant Islam. When he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in autumn 2015, he amazed the secular audience in his acceptance speech with an invitation to pray for a Christian who was persecuted in the Middle East. His speeches are collected in the current volume “Tomorrow is here”. From these he will read on September 1 in Paderborn. The Paderborn literary scholar Michael Hofmann will speak with Navid Kermani about his speeches and his understanding of the social responsibility of the writer in the immigration society.
