February 2 Tomer Avivi on Some Charming Paphiopedilum Plants!
Our February program will be presented by an American Orchid Society student judge, Tomer Avivi from the West Palm Beach Judging Center. As a student judge, Tomer has put together a program on a Paphiopedilum subgenus: Brachypetalums.
Paphiopedilum translates as “slipper of Aphrodite” and its common name is the ladyslipper orchid. Brachypetalum refers to the short inflorescence.
There are over 80 different Paphiopedilum species and to help understand the plants the genus has been broken into sections called subgenus. Tomer will be giving his talk on a basic level so don’t worry about it being too complicated if you are a new grower.
This is an opportunity to learn about a charming and long lasting Paphiopedilum section. And we are searching for plants in this group for the raffle table. They haven’t been easy to locate but we have some of our best orchid hunters on the job!
Brachypetalums have beautiful mottled leaves, one or two large white or yellow flowers on a short stem and grow on limestone. Flowers are usually spotted maroon and are from Asia (there are alba or pure white flowers with no spots but generally these orchids have spots).
Please bring your orchids to the meeting for the Show & Tell Table. That is an education in itself for the rest of us - we get to see what grows well in our area.
Thanks, Carol Holdren, FWOS Vice President/Program Chair
