Heritage Walking Tour of Wakefield City CentreDid men do 'more' in history? You'd think so given that only 14% of blue plaques across the celebrate the achievements of women. Join us on this informative, entertaining and engaging heritage walk and make your own mind up.
Did you know that Edith Mackie's greatest legacy to Wakefield was in healthcare, education and providing opportunities for poor women?
Or that without Florence Beaumont all women in Great Britain would not have got the vote in 1928?
Or that without Ann Hurst, Elizabeth Dawson and Clara Clarkson, Wakefield would not have been at the centre of the British anti-slavery movement from1832 onwards?
Some men are keen to tell us that other men throughout history 'just did more' but this is absolutely not true. On any level.
Wakefield's Forgotten Women of Wakefield #blueplaqueparity campaign has proved over and over again that women from our Merrie City not only contributed to the political, social, economic, creative and spiritual landscape of our city but were the driving force behind fundamental changes within British History.
Join us for this Forgotten Women of Wakefield Blue Plaque heritage walk to learn more about the inspiring women who shaped our landscape, attitudes and identity. This is the final opportunity to experience this ever popular tour in 2024.
Delivered by a passionate group of dedicated women who look great in historic costume, the 'Round Our Way' team, who have delivered heritage walks through Wakefield since September 2023 to raise funds for the physical cost of blue plaques for other inspirational women from history, will astound, delight, intrigue and entertain you with stories of significant women from Wakefield's past.
We'll meet outside St John's Church, Wentworth Street, Wakefield where our circular tour will begin. The tour is scheduled to last 90 minutes, but allow up to two hours; there's a lot to tell you and we're always happy to answer questions as we walk. On street parking is free after 6pm
Your tour will start promptly and we kindly ask that you arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the start time. Use the map below for directions or you can also find us using what3words spider.memo.army

Raising funds for Blue Plaques for Women
Sarah, Olivia, Debbie, Jack and Marianne are an entirely volunteer team of researchers and activists who share Wakefield's fascinating herstories to raise funds to pay for blue plaques for women in order to raise awareness of a forgotten past. Each blue plaque costs over £800 and, as many of the women deserving a permanent legacy remained unmarried and without children there is no one to nominate them, or indeed contribute to the cost of a plaque. These heritage walks are an entirely voluntary Dream Time Creative production with 1000's of hours given in research, publicity and expertise.
There are currently more than 33 plaques with dedicated female names across Wakefield District, which makes us the top city in the UK to recognise our Forgotten Women BUT there are lots more women whose stories need to be told and acknowledged. Hear about some of them on the tour and help us to raise the much needed funds for our next plaque.
Learn more about the Forgotten Women of Wakefield project and see how important it is that women are recognised for their achievements, and help Wakefield to become the first city with true blue plaque parity.
