This training course and qualification will provide you with the knowledge and skills to lead or set up a Forest School or Bush Kindy.
We love enabling educators in schools and early learning centres to lead Forest School and Bush Kindy, and helping to enrich children's learning.
Forest school is about how to use the outdoors in teaching. The ethos is about promoting children's confidence, self esteem and independence through small achievable tasks. It provides children with educational experience in a natural environment, that also builds their wellbeing such a health, social skills, resilience and motivation.
Forest School Leader Training is a 5-day hands-on practical outdoor training course preceded by an online module of theoretical learning (of up to 20 hours including assessment).
This outstanding training incorporates learning with bush experiences. You will improve your confidence and ability to work outside with children, and align your school or centre's ethos with that of Forest Learning, receiving up to date advice on health and safety, and how to empower children to manage risk...and much more.
Suitable for:
- Early Childhood Educators and Directors
- Primary School Teachers and Principles
- Educators with a Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education & Care, Diploma, or Equivalent Experience
Training consists of a 5-Day Course & Assessment. Theoretical and Practical Learning includes:
- Links to educational theorists, the EYLF, National Quality Standards, My Time, Our Place and the Australian National Curriculum
- Children’s holistic development and how the approach links to self-esteem, resilience and emotional intelligence
- Risk management and health and safety policy and practice, including outdoor first aid scenarios
- Children’s brain development, learning styles, schemas and behavioural management at Forest School
- Observations and analysis of Forest School sessions with children
- The environmental impact and management of the Forest School site
- How to plan and evaluate Forest School sessions How to complete a ‘Forest School Handbook’ for your service
- An introduction to flora and fauna in Queensland and how to share the knowledge with children
- Common knots, lashing and building self-supporting structures and shelters
- Safe tool use, policy, practice and maintenance, and woodcraft activities
- Fire lighting, management, and safety cooking on a fire

In order to gain the Level 3 Qualification, requirements include:
1. Online Learning Module at home, with assessment (up to 20 hours)
2. Attendance at this 5 Day Course
3. 50 hours of additional study to complete assignment work to support the implementation of your Forest School Program
4. A Site Visit and Lesson Observation
Cost: $2225 to include Open College Network West Midlands registration
