Through 2024, Uncle Jim Everett - puralia meenamatta has taken action for Lutruwita’s native forests. In March, he was arrested while defending forests in the Styx Valley. In October, he was again taken into custody for protecting forests in the central highlands. He has since refused to attend a number of court dates, stating that the colonial courts do not have jurisdiction over First Nations protecting Country.
Lutruwita’s forests hold significant ecological, climate, and cultural values. They are home to countless threatened species, store carbon and mitigate the effects of climate change, and hold the first Law of Lutruwita - Palawa Law - which is in Country.
Uncle Jim has called upon all people to act this January. He has lit a spark of hope to find another way forward through the pre-eminent Law of Lutruwita, to protect ecosystems from destruction, and to end the colony and find new belonging in place.
To honour Uncle Jim and continue building momentum for the forests, GRANT is hosting Forest Fest on Sunday the 19th of January 2025. The event will be both a celebration and a moment of collective action.
Forest Fest will take place at a threatened forest in the south of Lutruwita, around 70 mins drive from Nipaluna/Hobart, or 40 mins from Huonville. The site is 2WD accessible - however there are gravel roads. We encourage folks to carpool in the most suited vehicles accessible - we will also post a carpooling forum on the event page in the coming week. The exact location will be announced closer to the date
Please bring everything you need for a full day in the forest - food and water for the day, suitable clothing for all weather, any medications, and any equipment you will require (e.g. walking poles for people who might be unsteady walking on uneven ground). There is a bar of reception on site and we will have first aiders present.
Forest Fest will be an inclusive and sober event. Any type of discrimination or hate will not be accepted.
