Forest Bathing Walk at Theodore Roosevelt Island with Ana Ka'ahanui

Join naturalist and Certified Forest Therapy Guide, Ana Ka’ahanui from Capital Nature, for an introduction to forest bathing among the trees on Theodore Roosevelt Island. “Shinrin-yoku,” or taking in the forest atmosphere with all of your senses, is a way to slow down, unwind and connect to the natural world. Through a series of simple sensory exercises we’ll be experiencing the wonders of nature with this relaxing mindfulness practice.

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, began in Japan in the 1980s as a response to the overly stressed and over-worked status of citizens of Tokyo and other urban areas. The Forest Agency of Japan began encouraging people to get out into the forests periodically and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature with all of their senses. The practice, which is rooted in the ancient Japanese reverence for nature, has caught on all around the world as people everywhere are discovering the joys—and proven mental and physical health benefits—of time spent in nature.

What to Wear and Bring: Dress in layers for the weather and bring water and snacks. Wear sunscreen and a hat. Insect repellant may be desirable.

What to Expect: We will be walking very slowly and covering a short distance during our two-hour forest bathing walk while soaking up the beauty of our surroundings. Be prepared for some rocky and unpaved terrain at times.

Advance registration is required; space is limited. If you can no longer attend, please let us know as soon as possible.

Weather

This event will take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather where safety could be jeopardized, the tour will be rescheduled.

Getting There
Theodore Roosevelt Island sits in the Potomac River near the Key Bridge. While the only way to reach the island by land is from the Virginia side of the river, the island is actually part of Washington, DC.

Parking

Drivers can only reach Theodore Roosevelt Island from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. After Memorial Bridge, follow the sign to turn right into the parking lot. Then take the pedestrian bridge to reach the island.

Public Transportation

The island is a 10-15 minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro station. From the station, walk toward the Key Bridge. A short connecting trail leads downhill from the downstream side of the bridge, across the parkway, and into the parking lot at Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Bikes

Enter off the parking lot at Theodore Roosevelt Island. Bicycles are not allowed on the island. Bicycle racks are located near the footbridge.
