Foraging Walk in Riverbend Park
Join us for a fun and educational foraging walk at Riverbend Park! Explore the diverse plant life with Jen Reelitz and learn about the edible treasures found in nature. This plant walk is perfect for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Don't miss out on this opportunity to connect with the great outdoors and discover the wonders of foraging!
Riverbend Park has incredible old oak growth with many edible and medicinal plants. On this walk, you'll learn to identify the leaves of over a dozen edible and medicinal plants, as well as the leaves of trees, including wild fruit trees. We'll also show you any toxic plant species we spot, so you increase your knowledge of what to eat and what not to eat! This is for educational purposes; we will not remove plants from the park. The trails are mostly shaded, but feel free to wear a hat or sun protection if desired. A pair of good walking shoes and a water bottle are advisable.
A printed list of plants we might spot will be provided. Please bring a pen if you want to take any additional notes. Classes are held rain or shine. Let's get out in the woods and learn new things!
Once in the park, take your first left toward the Office and we'll meet under the awning by the bathrooms.
Jen Reelitz is a self-educated food forest enthusiast and author of the book Food Forest Revolution. She has spent the last eight years learning how to grow food in the subtropics. Jen is admittedly a lazy gardener who loves the low-maintenance growing method that food forest offers. Jen is the owner and operator of Food Forest DIY, a company that offers backyard food forest consultations, design, installation, maintenance, and educational content. Jen is also a public speaker and a frequent guest on a variety of podcasts, venues, and events including Mounts Botanical Garden, 1000 Hours Outside, the Florida Homeschool Convention, and in local libraries and schools. Jen's goal is to help adults and children alike discover the wonder of dirt and enjoy the beauty and bounty of the earth. She hopes to help people find joy and satisfaction in growing food for their family.
