About this Event
This is an in-person beginner mushroom identification workshop with a foray to put your newfound knowledge to practice. This beginner workshop will teach you about the wonderful world and variety of fungi. Participants will learn how to properly identify common mushrooms as well as the poisonous varieties to avoid.
The first part of our time together will take place at the farm and will take an hour. To start, the workshop will cover basic mushroom knowledge. A tour of the farm and a mushroom identification book will be included.
We will then go off-site to a local hiking trail for the fungal foray. Workshop participants will look for mushrooms, “bag and tag”, and learn how to identify typical North Carolina mushrooms found. All materials and a spore kit are included.
Your instructor for the workshop will be Shannon Phillips of Winding Brook Farms. He will also be your guide for the fungal foray and identification process. Shannon is an avid outdoor enthusiast and citizen scientist. He is a certified mushroom forager.
