for Good Measure: Basher

Byron Asher is a New Orleans-based saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer working at the intersection of experimental composition, jazz, and improvised music. Originally from Maryland, he has been a key figure in the city’s creative music scene since 2011. In spring 2024, he released two LPs on Sinking City Records: Lord, when you send the rain with his large ensemble Skrontch Music and May Day with his free jazz party band, Basher. His 2021 release Doubles earned 4 stars from Downbeat and praise from Pitchfork, while his Skrontch Music debut was a top 20 jazz album of 2019. A music professor at the University of New Orleans, Byron has collaborated with Aurora Nealand, Helen Gillet, James Singleton, and others. His 2021 duo album Little Bigby was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Recording by Offbeat Magazine.
