For generations, Footscray has been a place of welcome for people from all walks of life. Despite some of the rhetoric, it is not even in the top 10 Melbourne communities for crime.
It remains a relatively safe and vibrant place to live. But life in Footscray has become hard for many people. Our governments are pulling away from providing the housing and services that create safety and stability for everyone.
The housing and cost of living crises are having an impact and we have all witnessed more people who are sleeping rough, unwell or otherwise in need.
Shamefully, Maribyrnong Council have responded to this need by spending $100 000 for security guards to patrol central Footscray.
We know, and the evidence tells us, that security responses do not work. What works is people supporting each other and governments providing the housing and services that we need.
Join us to take back the mall and show Council and the state government that people are not problems to be surveilled and moved on. People are what makes Footscray great!
