Football first appeared as a discipline at the Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris. Since that year it has been included in the programme of all Olympic Games except for the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles. Until 1996 only men's national teams participated in the tournament. After the Atlanta Games women's teams began to take part in the Olympics.
Until 1984 professional athletes could participate in the games but only representatives of Africa Asia and the CONCACAF zone and Oceania. This ban was lifted in 1992 but with it an age limit was introduced. It stipulated that players must not be older than 23 years of age.
In 1996 the IOC allowed teams to have three players of any age provided that the other players in the team are not older than 23.
As of today the U.S. team leads the overall medal standings. Hungary is second and Great Britain rounds out the top three. In the men's medal standings Hungary is the leader while Great Britain and Brazil share the second and third places respectively.
The football tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics will be held from 24 July to 10 August in 7 cities: Paris Dequin-Charpieu Marseille Nantes Bordeaux Nice and Saint-Etienne.
Sixteen teams will qualify France having reserved its place as host country. The remaining 15 teams from regional cups and championships: 3 participants from the European Championship (U21) two from the CONCACAF Championship (U20) 3 participants from the African Cup of Nations (U23) 1 representative from the OFC Tournament (U23) 2 participants from the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament (U23) the AFC Asian Cup (U23) will be represented by 3 participants and 1 participant will represent the AFC-CAF Playoffs (U23).
The grid of matches is as follows: firstly the group stage is played. Its winners qualify for the play-offs of 8 teams out of 16. Next are the quarter-final games then the semi-finals the bronze medal game and the final game of the Olympics - the gold medal match which will be held on 10 August.
