Food for Thought: Conversation with Chhaya Kolavalli

K-State's Urban Food Systems Initative, in collaboration with KC Black Urban Growers (KC BUGS, Growing Growers, & Flagship Books, is excited to host an evening with local author Dr. Chhaya Kolavalli to discuss her book "Well-Intentioned Whiteness."

Chhaya holds a PhD in applied anthropology from the University of Kentucky, and an MA in anthropology from the University of Kansas. Her research has focused on the intersection of race and racism, poverty, and gentrification through the lens of urban agriculture. Her first book "Well-Intentioned Whiteness: Green Urban Development and Black Resistance in Kansas City" is published by the University of Georgia Press, and takes a historical and ethnographic look at both white and Black-led urban agriculture projects in Kansas City and their impacts on food insecurity and gentrification. Her work can be found in other publications, as well, such as Gastronomica, Human Organization, and Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development.

During this event, Chhaya will share about what the research looked like will give a solid foundation about the history of how our region has treated Black folks in relation to urban agriculture projects. She will discuss some high-level impacts of these historical practices, and will leave plenty of time for faciliated community conversation. Please come eager to listen, learn, and engage.

Books will be available for sale and a book signing will take place. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided.

This event is free but if you'd like to make a donation, all proceeds will go directly to KC BUGS.
