FOLLOW is a coaching trajectory for emerging photographers in the Netherlands, presented by Fotolab Kiekie and Melkweg Expo. Professional photographers earlier in their career with an ambitious plan for a photography project to capture contemporary society are invited to apply. For six months, they are guided by FOLLOW coaches Fleurie Kloostra (Melkweg Expo), Denise Woerdman (Fotolab Kiekie) and professional photography experts from organisations such as Underpromise Agency. The two photographers selected for FOLLOW ’21 are Alma Kim and Nkeiru Ofor.
Alma Kim (1989) was born in South Korea, where she studied and worked in fashion design. She moved to the Netherlands in 2016 to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. She graduated from the Photography department in 2020. Her work focuses on intimate portraits—both of people and objects—with a recently developed fascination for plants. Her goal is to capture and highlight the often unseen essence of what surrounds us.
Nkeiru Ofor (1999), aka Nky, is a Nigerian-Dutch photographer, director and graphic designer based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Ofor creates work that speaks to her heritage and the intersections of culture within society. She captures people and objects through her perspective—one that may not be commonly shared. She aims to create contemporary ideas and stories through her interest in music, fashion, and the cultures and communities around her.
Both photographers use still and moving images as tools in exploration of their own cultural identities, as well as the identities of those portrayed by them. The central question in both projects is how to stay connected to your own roots and cultural heritage, while trying to get rooted in new soil.
FOLLOW ‘21 is made possible with the support of the Mondriaan Fund and the Pictoright Fund.
