We hope that the first folk train on the Manchester to New Mills line in a very long time will depart Manchester Piccadilly at 1:18 pm on Saturday 13 September 2025 bound for Strines with live folk music onboard.
Due to arrive into Strines at 1:47 pm, the musicians will step off the train and back in time as they and their fans follow in the footsteps of Edith Nesbit’s The Railway Children and head up the woodland track to Brookbottom and The Fox Inn.
Once at the hamlet of Brookbottom, an afternoon of folk music will follow in the charming setting of the Fox Inn or, if we’re lucky with the weather, outside enjoying the fine views.
Of course, if you live in New Mills you don’t need to take the train and you can just have a stroll along Brookbottom Road to The Fox Inn.
This is a free-to-attend and the-more-the-merrier event. There will be a number of organised musicians playing between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm but if more people would like to come and play we’ll just continue into the night.
Whilst the event is free to attend, musicians do need to drink so donations will be gratefully received. If you think musicians should drink less then we’ll also have a charity collection you might choose to put your pennies in instead.
Once the music has finished, those needing to return to Manchester can take a regular train back from Strines.

For those thinking of driving, please note parking at The Fox Inn is limited so you might like to consider parking at Strines Station and walking the last bit.
*Note: If the folk train part doesn’t work out there will still be normal trains from Manchester to Strines and there will be an afternoon of folk at the Fox regardless!
