Sue Nelson Buckley, author of The Trouble With Jake, will give a reading, workshop, and Q&A on Saturday, September 28th at 1:00 pm in Golding’s Lounge at the Imperial Theatre!Using her first published novel, The Trouble With Jake, as an example, Sue will demonstrate how to move from an original concept to a complete book.
She will include:
Expanding an original idea and evolving it into a full-length novel.
Incorporating changes to characters and plot.
Keeping the story and setting relevant and up-to-date.
The presentation will include a reading of the original The Trouble With Jake short story and an excerpt from the published novel.
There will be a workshop portion of the presentation threaded through the reading and lecture that will have the participants:
A. Create a story based on one of the three presented prompts in a 5 - 10 minute timeframe.
B. Adding details like main character traits, scene details, or thoughts on the next scene within a 3 - 5 minute timeframe.
C. Creating additional opportunities to expand the story in the future within a 3 -5 minute timeframe.
The presentation will end with a question and answer session for Sue and a Partridge Island Publishing representative. This will allow the participants to delve deeper into Sue’s author journey and how to expand a story, the publishing industry, and the writing community within Saint John.
Although this is an all-ages, all-skill-level presentation, the topic is aimed at newer writers.
