About this Event

We invite you to Flux in the City at Frog in Hand's Art Shelter!

A participatory theatre show about city consultations, civics in the urban environment and who holds the power to make decisions when it comes to the future of cities. This interactive sharing will take the form of a municipal Town Hall in the GTA.

Join theatre artists Wesley and Nathaniel in envisioning a better, more human city through an interactive workshop in which participants will rehearse ways to engage with their communities and municipal politics, and bring to life their ideal city in a short performance.

A reminder that this is a work-in-progress sharing for a small audience, not a finished piece and we will be looking for feedback for future iterations of this work and invite you to participate in a placemaking activity!

Nathaniel Hanula-James is a theatremaker who collaborates on new work as a dramaturg, playwright, administrator, and performer. Nathaniel facilitates the Local Young Playwrights Unit at Tarragon Theatre, offers freelance dramaturgical support to artists across Ontario, and worked alongside Brian Quirt and Gloria Mok at the dramaturgical company Nightswimming for three years. In his writing practice, Nathaniel dedicates himself to crafting unabashedly queer worlds in which humour, cynicism, and wonder exist in constant conversation. In his object theatre piece, UNTITLED FLAMINGO PLAY (Talk is Free Theatre 2022, OutFest Halifax 2023, Incoming Festival 2024), a stuffed flamingo dispenses questionable advice to two queer children in search of their authentic selves. Nathaniel's play A CLOUD OF INK IN THE SHAPE OF HERSELF, commissioned by ZeeZee Theatre's National Queer and Trans Playwriting Unit, follows an archivist who descends to the Underworld in search of three Black queer historical figures who consume her research and her imagination. They are a staff writer at Intermission Magazine and are working with Dr. Karen Fricker to develop a new open-access course in Equitable Theatre Criticism. Nathaniel is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada's acting program, Humber College's Arts Administration Program, and McGill University (BA Drama & Theatre).

Wesley Reibeling Wesley is a queer, disabled, multidisciplinary artist with a passion for community building and public space. He is co-chair of Jane’s Walk, Toronto Program Manager at Park People, and a board member at Urban Minds, as well as part of the advisory committee for the High Line’s Community First Equity Toolkit. Wesley was a recent mentor for the TMU School of Urban and Regional Planning Program where he is also a winner of the Penny Appeal Changemaker Award and Marilynn Booth award.
