Magnolia Grange: History, Elegance.....and Hauntings?
WELCOME TO MAGNOLIA GRANGE
Magnolia Grange is Chesterfield County's premier example of Federal-style architecture. Built in 1823 by William Winfree, the home showcases refind symmetry, intricate woodwork, and an air of timeless sophistication. Located directly across from the Chesterfield Courthouse, this well-preserved estate reflects the elegance of early 19th-century Virginia.
A HOME WITH HISTORICAL ROOTS
Named for the circle of magnolia trees and boxwood gardens that once adorned its lawn, Magnolia Grange has long been tied to the county's political development. Many of its former residents held public office and left their mark on Chesterfield's history. Though the gardens were lost after the Civil War, the house retains its architectural grandeur, with influences drawn from Asher Benjamin's American Builder's Companion (1806). Elaborate ceiling medallions, ornate Federal-style mantels, and elogant Ionic columns remain intact. A major restoration in the 1970s revived these features and added Zuber scenic wallpaper and decorative marbling. In 1984, Chesterfield County aquired the home, which now operates as a public museum managed by the wonderful people at the Chesterfield Historical Society.

IS MAGNOLIA GRANGE HAUNTED?
According to local legend and numerous firsthand accounts, the answer is a chilling.....YES! Paranormal investigators, mediums, guests, and staff have all reported eerie happenings within the home. Witnesses frequently describe the apparition of a Victorian-era woman on the second-floor stair landing. Some have even mistaken her for a historical reenactor-only to discover she wasn't part of the event! One visiting medium identified the spirit of a man in a black suit in the parlor, believed to be William Winfree himself, who met an untimely and violent death in Richmond in the 1840s.
