Melbourne singer-songwriter Floyd Thursby celebrates the launch of his new album ‘Every Day’s Another Dance’ at the Taproom at Shedshaker on Sunday 21 July at 5pm with Dan Witton on double bass and backing vocals and Harry Lye on vibraphone.The twelve new songs range from a simple love song and exercise in close harmony (Brenda Lee) to a satirical take on environmental issues (Brand New 4WD), from a homage to pioneering publisher and suffragist Louisa Lawson (O Louisa) to a tragic tale of a mining disaster (This Beating Heart).
The album has a number of songs written during the long dark days of Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns, which conjure feelings of love (Brenda Lee), hope (Every Day’s Another Dance) and anxiety (My Constant Companion), as well as older songs that for some reason focus on poultry: Turkey Tail Blues was inspired by the fried turkey tail snack Floyd found at a Samoan cafe in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, and The Ballad of Chicken Corner came from an appreciation of a local roast chicken shop. There’s also a rare cover, ‘Do not forsake me’, a beautifully crafted ballad from the acclaimed Western drama ‘High Noon’ (1952), Floyd’s father’s favourite film.
‘Every Day’s Another Dance’ was recorded and mixed by long-time collaborator Marty Brown (Art of Fighting, Clare Bowditch), who also provides percussion and occasional backing vocals, and is available for download or CD purchase on bandcamp (www.floydthursby.bandcamp.com), or for streaming on all major streaming platforms.
