About this Event
This workshop combines practical self-defence training with some information about the law, helping participants build confidence, personal safety and awareness in everyday situations. After a brief introduction to the legal aspects of self-protection, the workshop focuses on practical exercises, including self-defence techniques and real-life scenarios. It finishes with a cool-down and a discussion, allowing participants to integrate what they have learned. The session is carefully tailored to ensure that activities are safe and sensitive to participants’ experiences, avoiding triggers that could cause distress or emotional discomfort.
* Led by Zen Waters CIC instructors Jason Ashton and Debbie Okeefe
Zen Waters is a community-based organisation in Bideford that supports people affected by abuse, bullying, trauma, and social disadvantage. All staff and volunteers are fully trained, vetted, and follow safeguarding and confidentiality policies to create safe, inclusive spaces for participants.
The organisation offers trauma-informed counselling in confidential settings and, where appropriate, they complement physical training to support both mental and physical recovery. They offer free women’s self-defence programmes and free martial arts training for children and young people whose circumstances place them at a disadvantage.
For individuals who have experienced abuse, they offer free training pathways designed to rebuild confidence and skills in partnership with Holistic Therapies Training Academy Ltd. They also work in partnership with schools, colleges and training providers. Here is how Zen Waters describe themselves: ‘We exist to help individuals and communities say no to abuse, intimidation, and bullying — whether in the workplace, in education, or in everyday life. This includes corporate bullying, school-based bullying, sexual abuse, coercion, and threats to personal safety.’
