The first of three sessions on the theme of Walking with Elijah Toward Wholeness
Inspired by Duke University’s Clergy Flourishing Model

Elijah, burned out after spiritual triumph, flees to the wilderness, prays for death, and meets God—not in wind, earthquake, or fire, but in the “still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:1–18

With the shape of ministry is changing, many clergy find themselves pouring out continually while rarely being poured into, quietly battling fatigue, discouragement, or even burnout. Some find themselves embattled by structures that impact their ministry and create struggle to find room to express the heart of their calling.
This series, Flourishing in Ministry: Walking with Elijah Toward Wholeness, is a space designed to offer a time to reflect and reconnect. Drawing on Duke University’s groundbreaking research on clergy wellbeing and the profound story of Elijah’s encounter with God in exhaustion, the series offers practical tools and deep spiritual encouragement to help rediscover rhythm, resilience, and renewal.
Over three guided sessions, we’ll join with fellow clergy to understand what is impacting wellbeing and what can strengthen it, explore sustainable practices for health and ministry, and identify steps for renewed connection for the long haul. We offer an invitation to step aside, listen for the still small voice, and allow time to connect with yourself. Come as you are—there is room for your honesty, your sharing of what you’ve learned.
The three sessions are designed as a series, but all are welcome to join for as many of the sessions as they are able to attend.
SESSION 1 (6 Nov): Facing Reality in the Wilderness
Scripture Focus: “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life.” – 1 Kings 19:4
Helping you identify where you are on the wellbeing spectrum in the Duke model and reflect on current challenges and gifts to bring.
SESSION 2 (13 Nov): Receiving God’s Provision and New Rhythms
Scripture Focus: “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” – 1 Kings 19:7
Exploring practical strategies for rest, health, and sustainable ministry rhythms.
SESSION 3 (20 Nov): Hearing the Whisper, Renewing Connection
Scripture Focus: “The Lord was not in the wind… but in a gentle whisper.” – 1 Kings 19:11–12
Cultivating new awareness of God’s quiet presence and connections that restore while planning for more.
