A native bird in a modernist tree: further reflections on Don BinneyPlease join us for a talk with Gregory O’Brien on Saturday 6 September, from 12-1pm at our Onehunga Gallery.
Coinciding with our current exhibition Don Binney: A Flight Through Time, we have invited New Zealand writer, painter and art curator Gregory O’Brien to speak on Don Binney's artistic practice.
Since publishing his monograph, Don Binney: Flight Path in 2023, O’Brien states that interest in the artist has grown hugely and further works have come to light. Notable examples include Kaka, Stewart Island (1964) and one of the Fatbird paintings included in our exhibition. This is the first major exhibition of Binney’s paintings in over 20 years, offering a rare chance to view works held in private collections, the majority of which have not been publicly exhibited in many years.
In this informal talk, O'Brien will focus on works from an early peak in Binney's career, the mid-1960s, at which time his reputation was soaring, and his paintings were dynamic and unfettered – unprecedented in the art of Aotearoa, or anywhere else for that matter.
O'Brien will examine the unlikely union of ornithological painting and modernist experimentation at the core of Binney’s practice. He will also reflect on the artist’s enduring commitment to indigenous and local subjects, and his personal engagement with the burgeoning conservationist movement.
