About this Event
Discover how to create with monotypes, resist tools, watercolors, ink and more. Students will experience an exploratory introduction to printmaking, watermedia painting and expressive mark making. All levels welcome.
Imagine a world of layered, abstract, botanical shapes on paper. This workshop is perfect way to spend two days discovering how to create with monotypes, resist tools, transparent watercolors, opaque inks and gouache paints on paper. Based on biomorphic shape making, this process will allow you to discover ways to define the space around biomorphic shapes with deep values and colors. Pattern and texture will be the main ingredients for our compositions. We will start the process with monotype printmaking to build up a foundation of textures and botanical shapes. Watercolors will be glazed on top, adding luminosity and brilliant color. Part of the beauty of this technique is revealing some of the underlying imagery in selected spots. To build opacity, we’ll work with gouache and inks to cover various areas to “float” the botanicals, giving a field of depth to the compositions.
Instructor will bring acrylics, texture materials, inks and gouache along with botanical references, printmaking tools, extra brushes and other tools to use while we work.
• 1 sheet 22” x 30” hot pressed watercolor paper - cut or tear in 1/2 so you end up with 2 sheets 22” x 15” each. The hot-pressed surface is completely smooth and will work better with the techniques we’ll use.
• 1 or more round watercolor brushes: #14. #12, or #10 ½ inch or larger flat acrylic brush
• Watercolors: professional grade pan or personal palette (tube watercolors in a palette) My suggested list of watercolors is on my blog:

Professional watercolor brands: Daniel Smith, M. Graham, Winsor Newton, Di Vinci, Holbein. Avoid round palette paints- they are too opaque and you won’t get good results with them.
