Flint knapping is the art of reducing rock into tools such as arrowheads, knives, and spear points. In this introductory class geared for kids, ages 10-14, we will cover the history of flint knapping, stone tools, and archaeology of Alaska. Students will be able to explore the techniques and mechanics of this art, and will have the opportunity to break ample amounts of rock and make multiple functional tools. We will primarily be working with obsidian, the sharpest material on earth.
