This year's selected films thoughtfully challenge monolithic viewpoints and honor the richness of diverse identities and cultures, shedding light on the complexity often overlooked by society. These films experimented with editing techniques that incorporate rhythm, repetition, and improvisation to create narrative and temporal experiences that reflect these diverse cultural backgrounds and storytelling traditions.
We are pleased to present a distinguished panel of adjudicators. The panel includes Cara Hagan, Associate Professor and Program Director for the MFA in Contemporary Theatre Performance at The New School. She is recognized as a mover, creator, writer, and curator, and serves as the Executive Director of Dance on Camera. Additionally, we are honored to welcome Jovan Landry, an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, who is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer, and hip-hop artist. Finally, the panel features Taylor King Crocker, a dance artist and educator with a comprehensive background in contemporary dance, jazz, rhythmic tap, and ballet. After the screening, festival director, Laura Chiaramonte, will announce the festival winner. Meanwhile, the Audience Award will reflect the enthusiastic input of our audience, making your voice a vital part of the festival experience!
As a key supporter and presenter of the Flatlands Dance Film Festival, Dance at Illinois recognizes the vast potential where choreography and the screen reside together. Dance films
provide greater access for audiences and more opportunities for visual/movement artists to utilize technology from a choreographic perspective.
