Flame Effects for the Artist Workshop – Phoenix, AZ February 21st and 22nd.
This class is for all artists, mechanical enthusiasts and all who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their projects! This is your chance to learn how to meet NFPA standards, hear from others working with flame effects where you live and have lots of fire fun while learning safe practices.
Sponsoring the workshop is the Roosevelt ArtWorks, a creative arts studio, gallery and tattoo shop in the Grand Avenue Historic Arts District, where they craft mixed media public art and host community events, projects and workshops.
And… Hosting us in their space will be Walter Where?House, the home of Walter Productions located in a unique Phoenix industrial zone. The 45,000 square foot facility was formerly a 1940’s era paper factory and now houses numerous mutant vehicles and large-scale art pieces. Part shop and part event space, the Walter Where?House is a true community space.
Class details:
We will begin Saturday morning by teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel-based flame effects into your work. Been thinking of adding Propane Flame Effects to your projects? This is the class for you. Each one of these classes has in the past drawn participants at all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions, unexpected learnings and projects that have been both fun and challenging!
This first day will consist mainly of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:
NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) codes including NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code and NFPA 160 Standard for the Use of Flame Effects Before an Audience.
We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas in liquid form and watch it vaporize with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects and fuel mortars. We will also look at control systems, pilot lights, hot surface igniters, and… of course, we will deep dive into fire safety and fire extinguishers. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands-on materials.
The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials we have on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect out of thin air and a pile of junk so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated in the final sculpture. We will have experienced metal fabricators on hand to help teach and share the welding and plasma cutting!
Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 20 years, and Eric Smith, President of Propane Solutions, LLC and owner of Poofer Supply.
The cost of this 2-Day class will be $195
Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.
Printed materials and a tasty and filling lunch with a local twist will be provided.
Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended.
PLEASE NOTE: Payment is required at time of registration, if you would like to make other payment arrangements please contact us at [email protected]
